Is it true that sometimes bone joints have to be broken to get rid of rigor mortis?

Absolutely not. Actually rigor mortis is a temporary condition. It is more evident in the remains of someone who has been physically active prior to death and usually passes from the body after a few hours.

Some flexing of the limbs may be necessary to loosen the rigor mortis, but trauma is never inflicted on human remains in the course of preparing them for the visitation and funeral.
